Early Morning Departure: The Chill of the Desert in Taxkorgan

We woke up at 5 a.m. that day. Outside, it was still pitch dark, and the air was biting cold. Our driver arrived at 6 a.m., picking us up from the village to head toward White Sand Mountain (White Sand Mountain Scenic Area). The temperature difference in the desert is extreme between day and night. We arrived too early; the villagers who serve as guides hadn’t woken up yet, and even the roosters were still quiet. We huddled inside the car to stay warm, watching the sky slowly lighten while waiting for almost two hours.

Camel Wool Weaving in a Small Village of Taxkorgan

Around 10 a.m. (7–8 a.m. local time), the village finally came alive. Our early-morning patience paid off as villagers began processing camel wool. We watched them spin the wool into threads and then weave it into fabric. This traditional craft has almost disappeared in cities, surviving only in small villages like this one. They even showed us blankets woven from camel wool. Rough yet warm to the touch, camel wool is durable, insulating, and breathable—a vital material for generations of Pamir highland herders. Witnessing this centuries-old craft in person was both fascinating and precious.

Riding Motorbikes to White Sand Mountain Sand Dunes: Thrills and Fear

To reach the sand dunes next to White Sand Lake, we had to ride motorbikes along a narrow, rugged path. On one side was a steep mountain; on the other, a slope descending to the sandy rocky ground and the lake. The road consisted of soft sand mixed with stones, and the bikes would occasionally sink or slide. The young guide rode confidently and much faster than I expected. I didn’t want to cling too tightly, but every jolt made me instinctively grab onto his jacket. My mind raced with thoughts like, “What if I fall and roll into the lake?” The ride was equal parts thrilling, terrifying, and nerve-wracking.

White Sand Mountain Sand Dunes: The Remote Beauty of Taxkorgan

When the bike finally stopped at the sand dunes, all my fear instantly felt worth it. Strictly speaking, this wasn’t a desert, but the sand was fine as powder, lightly drifting with the wind. The dunes were completely empty; just the three of us and the vast sky. Wind stirred the sand around us, and the air was so quiet that I could almost hear my own breathing. Each step sank into the soft sand, like being wrapped in it. I was extra cautious near the water, suspecting hidden quicksand, and kept my distance. The only disappointment was spotting a discarded plastic bottle in such a pristine place. As we ventured further, cell signal vanished completely, leaving us alone in the endless wilderness—it felt surreal and awe-inspiring.

Heart-Pounding Return: Sharing a Motorbike Back to the Village

Returning was even more intense. Originally three bikes had brought us in, but one broke down, leaving only two. We had to share a bike with the guide, tightly holding onto his back all the way to the village. The scenery was still breathtaking, but I dared not take any photos. At one point, the guide slipped slightly, and my heart nearly stopped. In that moment, I realized how age and experience have quietly changed my courage. What once felt like adventure now felt like a hope for safety. I probably wouldn’t attempt this path again, but that’s what made this experience unique.

Lunch at White Sand Lake and Taxkorgan Local Delights

After leaving the dunes, we returned to White Sand Lake Scenic Area for lunch. Warm noodles and freshly grilled lamb skewers revived our cold, tired bodies. The driver even made a detour to buy the local specialty “dinosaur eggs” (pomegranates), cheap and sweet. On the way back, we stopped in Shule County to enjoy more lamb skewers and noodles. By around 7 p.m., we finally returned to our guesthouse in Kashgar, bringing our four-day, three-night Taxkorgan adventure to a perfect close. Fortunately, altitude sickness was mild, and everything went smoothly, making the journey feel even more rewarding.
