Getting from Evora to Lagos: Our Rede Express Bus Experience
Evora was charmingly small, but the Algarve coast was calling! On December 23, 2025, we set off for Lagos. To make our travel day as smooth as possible, we deliberately booked a stay at HOTEL O CANTE—it’s just a 5-minute walk from the main bus station, which was perfect for an early start.
We were out the door around 8:30 am, made a quick stop at the station cafe for a rushed (but necessary\!) breakfast of bread and coffee, and confirmed our platform with the ticket officer. We were officially on the Rede Express bus heading south!
A Confusing but Connected Ride

If you’re taking this route, here’s a quick tip: the seat numbers aren’t above the seats; they’re located on the side of the handle. It caused a brief moment of confusion for us and a few other passengers, but once settled, the ride itself was smooth. We were grateful for the modern amenities like on-board WiFi and a power plug, allowing us to charge our phones (a travel day essential!).
Outside, the morning was gloomy. Portugal, even in the south, features a vast amount of peaceful, green plains. If it had been sunnier, I think the landscape would have been breathtaking\! Instead, we scrolled our phones or closed our eyes for a bit of rest.
Albufeira: The Quick Changeover
This route is not a direct shot to Lagos. After about three hours, we had to change buses in Albufeira. This bus station felt much newer and sleeker than the one in Evora, but it came with one ridiculous caveat: a €1 fee to use the toilet. Seriously?
Finding our transfer bus here also involved a brief moment of confusion, but we figured it out and were on our way for the final hour-long leg to Lagos.
Once we arrived, instead of navigating local transport after a long journey, we grabbed an Uber to our hotel. It was quick, stress-free, and not significantly more expensive than a bus to our specific location—a small win for a big travel day!

Lagos: Checking In and a Much-Needed Meal
By the time we settled into our hotel, it was 2:00 pm. Given that we hadn’t been out for dinner the night before (it was cold and rainy!) and only had a small breakfast, we were famished.
We immediately headed out to find some proper sustenance. We landed on a delicious local spot and indulged in grilled sardine and rabalo fish. It was quite nice, though we definitely got a workout casting aside plenty of tiny fish bones!

Postcard-Perfect Views: Exploring the Pinhao Coastline

With full stomachs, we started our afternoon exploration at the Pinhao coastline. Even in the winter, this place is stunning. We walked northwards and were treated to spectacular views of the rock formations and sea caves.

The occasional sliver of sunlight casting over the jagged rocks made for truly beautiful scenery. I took a casual picture, and my sister immediately commented it looked like a postcard—and she wasn’t wrong!

This area features long, beautiful beaches, which I imagine are packed in the summer. We couldn’t play in the water, but the winter beauty was a wonderful trade-off. We took a small detour into the main town area, then doubled back to the coast to walk southwards.

However, the sun sets quickly in December! We only managed to reach Praia Camilo before the light faded. That was our cue to call it a day.

Christmas Eve in Lagos: What’s Next?
And tomorrow is Christmas Eve! We’re hoping we can still find a few shops and restaurants open tomorrow so we don’t get stranded for food. Wish us luck!
That was our day: a smooth-ish journey, a great lunch, and some of the best coastal views Portugal has to offer. Time to rest up!

Is Lagos worth visiting in the winter? Absolutely.
While it is too cold for swimming, the coastline becomes quiet and majestic. You can enjoy hiking the Pinhao coastline and visiting Praia Camilo without the massive summer crowds.
