BEIJING — Passenger rail service between China and North Korea has officially resumed this week, restoring a key international transport link that had been suspended since early 2020.

The reopening marks the first regular cross-border passenger train service between Beijing and Pyongyang in six years, following strict pandemic-era border closures that halted nearly all travel into North Korea.

Key Facts

According to China State Railway Group, the restored route includes four weekly trains running between Beijing and Pyongyang, while a daily service operates between Dandong and the North Korean border city of Sinuiju.

Dandong, located in China’s Liaoning Province, serves as the primary railway gateway connecting the two countries across the Yalu River.

Before the pandemic, the Beijing–Pyongyang train route was one of the few international rail services entering North Korea and was frequently used by diplomats, business travelers, and organized tour groups.

Flights Between Beijing and Pyongyang May Resume

Alongside the rail reopening, reports indicate that Air China is preparing to resume direct flights between Beijing Capital International Airport and Pyongyang Sunan International Airport, potentially starting March 30, 2026.

If confirmed, the combined reopening of rail and air services would represent the most significant restoration of transport links between China and North Korea since international travel restrictions were introduced in 2020.

Travel Access Remains Strictly Controlled

Despite the return of passenger transport links, entry into North Korea remains tightly regulated.

Current travel conditions include:

For now, most travelers entering the country are expected to be business visitors, diplomatic personnel, or participants in officially approved tours.
