Kyoto – Arashiyama: Hozugawa River Boat Ride | Japan

15 May 2025

The second day, we went back to Kyoto again to enjoy the Hozugawa River Boat Ride.

They gave us plastic covers on 2 sides to prevent the water splashing on us. And three were 3ppl on the boat, one covers the front, and one covers the back. And they took turn as they have to use their hands to row the boat for the 2 hour ride. They were funny and engaging and tell us funny anecdotes along the way.

I think it is not the best season, maybe autumn and sakura  spring will have even more beautiful color. 2 hours were a bit long though, I was almost falling asleep half way.

It was worth a try though, in a way it was forcing you to enjoy slowly the local nature and scenery.

🌊 Hozugawa River Background

The Hozugawa River, once a vital transport route for goods traveling from Tanba to Kyoto, has been used for rafting since the 17th century. Today, the journey covers around 16 km of winding river between Kameoka and Arashiyama, surrounded by cliffs, lush forests, and seasonal scenery. The traditional flat-bottomed boats are still rowed by skilled boatmen, preserving the centuries-old river culture.

Arrival at Arashiyama

The boat tour ends at Arashiyama, one of Kyoto’s most famous sightseeing areas. And indeed—it was very touristy. The streets were packed with people, but also full of charming shops, cafés, and traditional treats. Matcha is always a delight in Kyoto, and I couldn’t resist another cup.

For lunch, we tried a beef hotpot. It was fun to taste, but a little too extravagant for us—I think I still prefer my simple beef sushi.

We strolled around Arashiyama, which has been a favorite leisure retreat for nobles since the Heian period (794–1185). The Togetsukyo Bridge, spanning the Katsura River, is one of the area’s iconic sights.

🌿 Bamboo Grove Walk

Of course, we walked through the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. Despite the crowds, there’s something magical about those towering bamboo stalks stretching endlessly toward the sky, swaying gently with the wind.

Background: The bamboo forest is part of the grounds of Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site founded in 1339. Historically, bamboo has been used in Japan for everything from building materials to protective fences around temples and shrines. Walking through it feels like stepping into another world—no wonder it’s one of Kyoto’s most photographed spots.

Back to Kyoto City Center

After Arashiyama, we went back toward Kyoto city center, strolling along the Daimaru shopping streets. We checked out a famous coffee place, browsed through the Kuroshio Market area, and later had a bowl of Ichiran Ramen—always a reliable favorite.

The train back to our condo was crowded, but after resting a bit, we decided to make the most of the evening.

Night at Dotonbori

We headed out to Dotonbori again. Even on a second visit, its neon lights, giant signboards, and endless street food stalls were as lively and energetic as ever. A fun way to end a long day of rivers, forests, and food.

✨ Travel Tips

Crowds: Both Arashiyama and Dotonbori are tourist-heavy—expect congestion but also lots of energy.

Best Season for Hozugawa Boat Ride: Spring (cherry blossoms) or autumn (red maples) are the most scenic. Summer can be hot, and winter rides are available but chilly.

Time Management in Arashiyama: Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the biggest crowds.

Food Tip: Instead of heavy meals in Arashiyama, try quick local bites (like yuba, matcha desserts, or beef croquettes) so you have room for ramen or izakaya later in Kyoto.
